2. Prepare your house common areas for break:
- Remove and dispose of all perishable food from the kitchen refrigerator (e.g., dairy products, meat/poultry/fish, produce).
-
- Condiments with extended “use by dates” (e.g., butter, ketchup, mustard, salad dressings) may remain in fridge
- Make sure all common area furniture is returned to the common area
- Ensure all common area windows are closed and locked
- Lock all common area doors
3. Return your room key:
Only return your key if you are changing rooms or moving out. DO NOT return your room key if you are staying in the same room for both fall and spring semesters.
- Room keys must be placed in the marked metal key box located in your House before you leave for the semester
- The key box will be located in a common area, or will be kept with your House Manager
- Not sure where the box is? Reach out to the Co-Op or your House Manager
How to return your key:
- Grab an envelope from the stack next to the metal box
- Got one? Great. Write your name and room number on it
- Place your key in the envelope and seal it
- Put the envelope (with your key in it) in the box
- Afraid someone will steal your key? It’s unlikely, but stranger things have happened. You can also return your key (in the marked envelope) directly to your House Manager or the Co-Op office
- Please do not combine your key with your roommate’s key in the same envelope
Key return notes:
- Nittany Co-Op tracks who has and who has NOT returned keys. Return your key to avoid being charged for a key replacement.
- You may give your key to someone else to return for you, but you remain responsible for that key until receipt is documented by the Co-Op
- New room keys for the Fall semester will be distributed through Nittany Co-Op during the Move-In weekend prior to the start of your next semester
- If you are planning to move out prior to finals week please return your key to the Nittany Co-Op office located at 226 E. Nittany Ave, State College. Our office is open Monday-Friday from 9 am – 4 pm. Please contact our office at 814.237.8800 or info@nittanyco-op.org with any questions or to arrange an alternative time to return your key.

Everything okay with your room? You're all set. Travel safely!
- Over break the Co-Op will complete a photo & video walkthrough inspection for:
- rooms that will be vacant or have a new tenant during spring semester (winter break only)
- all rooms regardless of tenancy (summer break only)
- We’ll work closely with your House Manager and leadership (undergraduate and alumni) to address any damages or areas of concern. Documentation will be provided to your house leadership, and is also available to tenants upon request.
